First Local Baby! (Stetson Vickers)

Just after midnight on New Year’s Day, the Akron–Canton region officially welcomed its first baby of 2026 at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, marking the start of the year in the most meaningful way possible!

While many people rang in the new year watching the clock or fireworks, one local family was beginning a moment that will define every January 1 from here on out. Hospital staff shared that both baby and family were doing well, turning a routine holiday shift into a moment worth remembering.

New Year’s babies have a way of grounding the calendar. They arrive quietly, without resolutions or expectations, reminding us that every year begins not with big plans, but with small, human moments. For this family, 2026 didn’t start with “what’s next” it started with right now.

Hall Of Fame News

As 2026 begins, one of Canton’s most ambitious projects is entering a new chapter. The Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Company, the developer behind the Pro Football Hall of Fame Village, has officially transitioned from a publicly traded company to private ownership.

On the surface, “going private” can sound like financial jargon. In reality, it’s a meaningful shift in how the project operates, and what its future in Canton could look like.

Why the Company Went Private

Over the past few years, the Hall of Fame Village vision has faced real headwinds: rising construction costs, delayed financing, and the pressure of operating as a public company while still very much in a development phase.

As a publicly traded company, HOFV was required to:

  • Report quarterly financial results

  • Answer to public shareholders

  • Manage market expectations alongside long-term construction timelines

That structure works well for mature companies. It’s much harder for a large, unfinished destination project still trying to build itself out.

By going private, the company removes that pressure, giving leadership more flexibility to restructure debt, seek private financing, and make long-range decisions without the constant scrutiny of the stock market.

What “Going Private” Changes

In practical terms, this move allows the organization to:

  • Focus on long-term development, not quarter-by-quarter results

  • Renegotiate financing and partnerships more quietly

  • Reassess which parts of the Village get built next and when

  • Streamline operations without public-market constraints

It does not mean the Village is shutting down, disappearing, or abandoning Canton. The Pro Football Hall of Fame itself remains a separate institution and is unaffected by the ownership change.

Why This Matters Locally

For Canton and Stark County, the Hall of Fame Village has always been more than a single attraction. It represents:

  • Jobs and construction activity

  • Hotel, restaurant, and tourism traffic

  • A national spotlight on the region

The private transition signals a reset rather than a retreat. After years of ambitious plans and uneven progress, the goal now appears to be stabilization, getting the existing pieces to work financially before expanding further.

That’s a quieter approach than early headlines promised, but potentially a more sustainable one.

The Big Picture

The Village’s future will likely unfold more slowly and deliberately than originally envisioned. Fewer splashy announcements. More behind-the-scenes rebuilding.

For a project of this scale, that may be exactly what it needs.

As Canton enters a new year, the Hall of Fame Village is doing the same, stepping away from public-market noise and into a phase focused on long-term viability. Whether that leads to renewed growth or a more modest footprint remains to be seen, but the direction is now clearer than it’s been in years.

Canton Museum of Art

The Canton Museum of Art has quietly refreshed its galleries for winter, rolling out new exhibitions and rotations as the year begins.

The museum’s winter lineup mixes contemporary regional artists with selections from its permanent collection, the kind of reset that gives even frequent visitors something new to discover. Expect thoughtful, approachable work rather than anything intimidating or over-the-top.

It’s a reminder that some of the best local culture doesn’t arrive with fireworks or headlines, it just opens its doors and waits for you to show up.

Why it’s worth your time:

  • Fresh exhibitions without crowds

  • Strong regional artists

  • An easy, low-key way to start the year doing something creative
